Your wedding is only a month or so away, and a seating chart is probably the last thing you want to deal with! However, this is not a task you want to leave up to someone else. Seating arrangements need to be well thought out, so it should be done by someone who knows all of your guests. And who better than you and your fiancé?! A seating chart with place cards will ensure that your guests have an enjoyable time at your wedding, which is your main goal!
We especially suggest seating charts if you have over 100 guests or if you’re having a plated dinner. Not all weddings need seating charts, but we always recommend them. Why? There are many scenarios where assigned seating can be beneficial. You certainly don’t want your wild party animal friend sitting next to your ultra conservative Aunt. Perhaps a few relatives don’t get along. Being able to seat them as far away from each other as possible will help prevent drama from occurring on your big day! If you have a guest who is coming to your wedding alone (and who doesn’t know anyone), you want to sit them with other guests who you know will mesh well with them. Your guests are seated at their tables for 1-2 hours (which is a large amount of time!) and you want it to be a good time for them! When a reception goes off without a hitch, your dance will be an absolute blast–and who doesn’t love a fun wedding dance?!
Today we’re going to cover some simple steps to create the perfect seating arrangement for your wedding. Plus we’re going to be adding in photos of our favorite place card holders to complete your perfectly organized seating arrangements!
Step 1: Find out how many people can fit at each table.
Check with your venue or wedding coordinator as each table can vary a lot! A 60″ round table typically fits 8 guests, but some venues have 48″ tables which will only accommodate 6-7 guests comfortably. This could be a bit of an organizational nightmare if you don’t know in advance the number of guests that can fit at each table. Also consider, are you using charger plates? Or garlands on the table? This will usually affect the number of guests you can fit comfortably at each table. Rectangular tables are often 6′ x 30″ which fits 6-8 guests (depending if you seat guests on the ends).
Step 2: Start a rough draft!
Now that you know how many guests your tables will fit, it’s time to start making a chart. Grab some post-its and a large poster board–it’s fool-proof! Draw out your tables on the poster board and write out all of your guests names on the post it notes. Place the post its next to tables you’d like your guests at. This way you can easily move your guests around as much as you need on your rough draft!
Step 3: Seat family close to the head table!
When first figuring out where your guests will sit, start with your family. It’s a good idea to seat your parents, grandparents and siblings closest to the head table!
Step 4: Make sure your guests are comfortable.
Make sure each guest knows at least one person at the table they will be sitting at (unless of course they don’t know anyone). Your guests will appreciate being seated next to at least one person they know.
Step 5: Encourage mingling!
While it’s important your guest knows at least one person at their table, it’s also a great idea to seat your guests next to people who will become their instant-friends! Consider personalities when creating your seating chart. Weddings can sometimes become “cliquey” if guests are only seated next to people they already know. Forcing your guests to mingle during the reception will create new friendships and make your dance incredibly fun!
Step 6: Choose your final look for place cards and a seating chart.
This last step is the best part! We’ve included our favorite place cards and place card holders in this post to make it super easy for you! With seating charts, we suggest hopping on over to Pinterest and pinning your heart out. There are so many cute seating chart ideas on there, and DIY options as well! The seating chart and place card holders can be a fun way to add personality to your wedding decor. Be sure to find something that suits your wedding theme!

Lets talk bridal makeup! I wanted to get an expert’s opinion on the subject, so I sat down to ask a few questions with my friend Crystal Parsons! Crystal attended Blanche MacDonald Centre, taking the Makeup and Film Artistry Program. She is currently a freelance makeup artist, specializing in bridal makeup. Today she’ll be giving us her best wedding makeup tips and tricks for that flawless look we all want on our wedding day!
- What look do you suggest if a bride is unsure of what she wants?
“First off, I’ll always ask a bride what they normally wear day to day for makeup. As a make-up artist I want to know: Are you a “natural girl” that only wears lipgloss? Or do you usually go to the nines with false lashes everyday? That way I know what will be too much, or not enough for them. I always try to suggest that we stay away from “fads” because that’s when you look back on your wedding photos and think ‘Why was I wearing chocolate brown lipstick? What was I thinking?’ I always say on your wedding day you should just look like a more beautiful version of yourself. Flawless! Flawless skin especially! That being said, if they’re a person that loves lots of makeup and crazy trends then I’m always open and game for doing what the bride wants. At the end of the day it’s their day! Normally before a wedding, I also send brides to look for ideas and pictures of makeup they like. Not that they’ll be exactly replicated, because I want them to know ‘You’re not Beyonce, you’re not going to look the exact same!’ But the pictures give me an idea of what the bride leans towards. If they like warm tones or cool tones, etc.”
- What are some tips you have if a bride is doing her own makeup on her wedding day?
•”Practice! Practice Practice! Often times if a bride is going away to get married, a good thing to do is get a trial/lesson done first by a makeup artist. That way a makeup artist can go over with her the products that she needs, and how to apply them.
•Long-wearing foundations are a must. Nothing is waterproof, but you want one that will last as long as possible. The more matte a product is, the longer it will last. Everything is about longevity with bridal makeup products.
•I always say to get your eyebrows waxed at least a few days prior to your wedding. Four days before is good. If you get your eyebrows waxed the day before, the makeup won’t adhere to the skin.
•Keep blot papers with you! They simply remove any excess oil throughout the day. If your face gets oily and you add layers and layers of powder your makeup will become cakey. The blot papers will remove the surface layer of oil before you touch up your makeup.
•For lipsticks I try and always use a matte lipliner all over the lips first (not just on the lip line). It lasts a long time! If the surface layer of your lipstick rubs off (which it will) then at least you still have the color underneath.
•I always suggest brides bring straws for their wedding (for the morning of and at the wedding). Always drinking out of straws avoids transferring the lipstick onto their drink.
•A lot of people will use the same brush for their different eyeshadows not realizing that it will make their eyeshadow look muddy. It’s important to know which brushes are for what. The longer and softer the brush, the less product it will pick up and the lighter the application will be. The shorter and stiffer the bristles the more product you will pick up and the denser the application will be. Makeup brushes make a huge difference and they are a big deal! You want to make sure you’re using the proper equipment!”
- What are your must have products for wedding makeup?
•Ardell Demi Wispies False Lashes: “I like them because the ends of lashes fan out and are sporadic which is how our lashes naturally grow. They aren’t solid and thick and dense and overpowering in pictures. They’re also shorter on the inner corner and longer on the outer corner which makes them perfect for a bridal look.”
•Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz and Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo: “Her products work amazing and have good longevity. A lot of times for blondes I’ll use a brow powder, and for brunettes I’ll use the brow pencil.”
•Tarte Clean Slate 360° Creaseless 12-Hr Smoothing Eye Primer: “I’ve used a ton of eye primers and this one has blown them all out of the water! It will literally last for 24 hours and doesn’t allow for any oil to come through. It also prevents creasing and makes eyeshadow colors stand out and not absorb into your skin.”
•Model in a Bottle Original Setting Spray: “It will help to make your makeup last all day!”
•Mac Oil Control Lotion: “Again, helps with the longevity of your makeup!”
•It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better™ CC+™ Cream with SPF 50+: “I love how it’s full coverage but it’s not drying or cakey. It feels light and blends well with different skin tones. It covers everything and gives a really flawless look. You can get it in an illuminating and matte version. Generally I’ll use the matte CC cream for weddings, but it depends on the clients skin type. The Your Skin But Better™ CC+ Illumination™ with SPF 50+ is especially great for mature skin since matte foundations can accentuate fine lines.”
•It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye™: “It’s amazing! Full coverage but again doesn’t feel heavy and doesn’t crease. The It cosmetics foundation and concealer are my absolute favorite out of anything I’ve ever used.”
•Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector® in Opal: “I use a lot of different highlighters, but I go back to this one a lot. You don’t want too much highlighter for photography. Some highlighters can be thick, chunky and almost glittery. It doesn’t look good in photos. This one isn’t overpowering though, it’s perfect!”
- Any don’ts for wedding makeup?
•Don’t try a brand new look you’ve never tried before. “This is not the time! It’s like getting your hair colored a brand new color. It takes a long time for you to adjust to seeing yourself that way and to actually like it. Remember on your wedding day you have time limits and restraints. Typically your makeup artist (and you) won’t have enough time to redo your makeup if you don’t like it. Trials aren’t necessary, but if you want to try a new look definitely get a trial!”
•Don’t go for makeup fads. “Well, not necessarily saying don’t. Nothing is off limits. Do what you like! But classic beautiful makeup looks don’t go in or out of style–which is key!”
•Don’t cheap out! “If a makeup artist says ‘this eyeshadow primer is the very best’ get it! Certain products you just won’t find at the drugstore. While there are certain products that are great at the drugstore! If a makeup artist has a few items that are must haves, definitely listen!”
•Don’t overbook your makeup artist! “When hiring a makeup artist for your wedding, know beforehand how many girls are getting their makeup done. Try not to book more than 5 girls per makeup artist. If you have anymore than that, book a second makeup artist. It’s not that the makeup artist can’t do more, it’s the fact that you’re starting earlier and earlier in the morning. If the first girl gets her makeup done at 6:00 AM, then she has already had her makeup on for 8 hours by the time of the wedding. Think of yourself on a daily basis, when you put your makeup on early in the morning and you look at your makeup at 5:00 PM. You usually feel like ‘Ugh, I feel like I’ve been in it all day, and I really need touch ups!’ Consider that! To keep everyone looking good and fresh, hire two makeup artists (if you have more than 5 girls). That way the makeup artist won’t be doing makeup in the dark at 5:00 AM. Natural light is a must!”
•Don’t do your makeup in artificial lighting. “A makeup artist (or whoever is doing the makeup) needs an area or space where there’s a good amount of natural light. Don’t do your makeup in the dark or in artificial lighting. Any artificial lighting with a yellow undertone will give your skin the appearance that it’s more bronzed and tanned than it really is. And lighting with a blue undertone is going to make you appear lighter and paler than you are. So natural lighting is key!”
•Don’t use heavy lotions or creams before applying your makeup.
•Don’t do your makeup too light. “One thing I always explain to the bride or bridesmaids (even if it’s a simple just pretty look) is that I will still be doing your makeup darker (than in the picture you bring). The reason for this is makeup shows up about 3 shades lighter in photography than in real life. So the makeup application has to be deeper and a little heavier than you would wear on a day to day basis.”
•Don’t get your makeup done last (the bride). “I prefer doing the brides makeup second last. I find in the last hour (unless there is a lot of time after for her) a bride is generally quite frantic. She is usually thinking of last minute things she needs to do. She’s often on her phone, running here and running there. It’s just not the experience that you want a bride to feel. You want her to feel relaxed and that there’s ample amount of time to get her makeup done. If the brides makeup is done second last, she will still have time to get last minute things out of the way. It also gives her the chance to bring down her anxiety before throwing on her dress.”We wish you all the best of luck on your wedding day makeup, whether you’re getting it done by a makeup artist or doing it yourself!
